The same idea holds for television, which is projected at 30 frames per second. Because we perceive these flashing frames as smooth movement, there must be something more to the visual system than just pictorial representation of the environment. In the visual processing system, it is the rods and cones that are primarily responsible for reception and processing of light signals. The rods and cones, however, do not directly “talk” to the brain. Intervening cells collect and process the signals from several photosensitive cells.

The large patches of cloud cause the moon rather than the clouds to be seen as the object in motion. When the retina is prohibited from scanning, the perceived image remains as the eye is moved. A bright light in a darkened room demonstrates this concept. After a bright image is shown or projected, we can perceive a ghostly after-image. This after-image follows wherever we point our eyes. But if we push the skin around the sides of our eyes with our fingers, the after-image does not move. This phenomenon is unlike regular visual stimuli, which move in the opposite direction from the one in which the eye is pushed.

The chemical film developer reacts and amplifies the silver specks and turns them black until they become visible. However, the developer does not affect the dark shadow areas much, and it forms a milky substance. Immersing the film in an aqueous acid solution (acetic acid) immediately halts the film development process. The latent image is then visible but is not permanent. If the film were exposed to light at this stage, the entire image would blacken, since the shadow areas would then react to the light.
